After the 2010 Maule, Chile, earthquake, EERI members Svetlana Brzev of British Columbia Institute of Technology, Vancouver, Canada, Maria Ofelia Moroni Yadlin and Maximiliano Astoza of Universidad de Chile, Santiago visited the earthquake-affected area, including Santiago, Rancagua, Cauquenes, Talca, Constitución, Iloca, Lolol, and Santa Cruz. The visit took place from July 3 to 10, 2010. This report summarizes the key observations related to performance of confined masonry buildings in the earthquake-affected area.

The presentation summarizes basic principles of confined masonry construction and was prepared for the Davos Conference on Risk in 2010 by the core group of confined masonry network participants. The lead author is Tom Schacher of Switzerland.
